Analysis Of The Six Films - Free Essay Example

Killing Us Softly 4: Advertising’s Image of Women analysis Killing Us Softly 4: Advertising’s Image of Women, produced by Cambridge Documentary Films, Inc. and released in 2010, is written by and stars Jean Kilbourne. In this latest movie in the Killing Us Softly series, Jean Kilbourne focuses on the way women are presented and represented in the advertisement industry, more so in the advertisements that run on different types of media. The film takes a critical look at an emerging pattern in gender stereotyping, using images and videos to show how advertising companies help propagate an unrealistic view, and perception, of sexuality, perfection and beauty. Expanding on the central issues covered in this film, objectification stands out as one of the biggest of them all. Jean asserts that advertisements often tell women that the most important thing about them is how they look. This message is then surrounded and forced by images and videos that portray the ideal look, which is more often than not unrealistic and unattainable. The message here boils down to this, a woman is only desirable when they look a certain way, essentially turning them into a thing to be used to sell products. The film also takes a look at how black women, women of color, are perceived and represented in the advertising industry. Essentially, they are not considered beautiful enough if they do not fit into the mould of white idealism; straight hair, lighter skin and perceived caucasian features. On the issue of image, Jean talks about black women getting featured in jungle settings, often wearing â€Å"exotic† clothing as if they were animals. Blacking Up: Hip Hop’s Remix of Race and Identity analysis Blacking Up: Hip Hop’s Remix of Race and Identity, produced and released by Limbic Productions in 2010, is directed by Robert Anderson Clift and stars some of the biggest names in the American Hip Hop culture. The film takes a critical look at racial identity as viewed through the lens of hip-hop music and culture. More specifically, the film focuses on the tensions that arise surrounding white identification in the hip-hop space. Moreover, the film also explores other themes such as exploitation, cultural admiration as well as what hip-hop means to white performers and white fans of rap music who claim the culture to be theirs. In the film, the filmmaker takes us through a series of questions, all of them culmination in asking what makes the black culture so attractive to white rappers. Speaking while wearing blackface, Al Johnson, a white rapper, tries to negate the idea that the perception of black rappers being lowly mem bers of society is wrong. Although the blackface Johnson wears while making his point irritates the black community, one scholar notes that what Johnson is doing is embracing the black facade and in a way trying to fight the racial stereotypes associated with black rappers. Robert Anderson also takes a look at authenticity, in this case, the authenticity of white rappers and how they fit into the hip hop culture. Although several rappers in the film feel that these white rappers are unauthentic as â€Å"they do not come from the culture†, the gnawing need for white rappers to be incorporated into the hip hop domain might prove that they have what it takes to fit in. More Than a Word: Native American- Based Sports Mascot analysis More Than a Word: Native American- Based Sports Mascot is a film produced and directed by John and Kenn Little and released in 2017. The film takes a closer look at the battles that have been fought in and out of courts by Native Americans in a bid to stop the NFL’s use of the word Redskins under any and all circumstances. The argument by the Native Americans is that the name is derogatory and should not have been trademarked as the NFL has done, going even as far as incorporating the word in the names of some teams. The film features pictures and videos combined with interviws from people in the know about the issue and the court battles, including professors, Native Amricans, historians as well as the fans of the washington football team using the word. In the film, the viewer is taken through the historical and dictionary definitions of the word, as well as how each of the groups mentioned above interprets the word. The film then takes a turn by exploring the issue of whether the owners of the football team are racist or if the people fighting for the team not to use the word are in fact themselves racists, hiding behind a word and court rulings, appeals and battles to put others down. In the film, one Native American even asserts that the use of the word is indeed racist and by Native Americans fighting for its abolishment, they are in fact fighting against neo-colonialism and reshaping the way they are viewed and represented. Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People is a film directed by Sut Jhally and produced by Media Education Foundation and was released in 2006. The film takes a look at how Arabs and Muslims are depicted in films and how their image is vilified and manipulated. The movie argues that the slander of Arabs in Hollywood has existed for almost a century and no one has batted an eye or even questioned this status quo. The arguments presented in this film are based on a huge collection of American films, some of them released in the early 1900s. The image of Arabs portrayed in this fil includes that of Arab men, viewed as evil, uncouth, nomadic and violent, and that of Arab women, viewed in the analyzed films as shallow and naive, serving greedy sheikhs. Jack Shaheen, the author of the book that this film is based on, argues that politics play a significant role in how these images are produced and disseminated. He says that politics and Hollywood often feed each other, with politics providing the propaganda that the films then latch on to produce their blockbusters. The blockbusters are then filled with the depictions mentioned above of Arabs. Another interesting point brought up in the film is the association between Muslims, Arabs and terror. The film looks at how Hollywood equates all Muslims to Arabs, all Arabs to evil and terror and then concludes that all Muslims must be evil. The film urges viewers to take a hard look at the messaging that came out after events such as the 9/11 attacks and differentiate between a sma ll group of terrorists and the massive world that is the Arab nation. The Girls in the Band: Female Jazz Musicians analysis The Girls in the Band: Female Jazz Musicians is a 2013 film directed by Judy Chaikin and produced by Artist Tribe and One Step Productions. The film takes a critical look at how female jazz players have been treated, represented and treated in the music industry. Although there are lots of great female jazz players, their treatment has not been the same as that of their male counterparts, as the film producers’ explored and discovered. The film is a story of these female jazz players and includes interviews, stories, challenges and experiences of some of the best women jazz players in those days. The film first takes a look at the unwritten rule that women jazz players could not be hired in the 1940s and 40s. The prejudice extended to the few women who were hired, who were often coached to fit into an acceptable mould set up by males in this male-dominated field. For example, they were told to smile while playing, an impossible feat, what to wear, more often than not pink, short, girly outfits, and how to act as they performed. There was also the feminine jazz look the girls had to look like film stars; slender, tall and light-skinned, an image propagated by the media of the day. In addition to all of the above, most of the women in the film talk about the general lack of role models as they grew up. They argue that this is because of a system that would not let women in, thereby leaving a gaping hole that men could not fill. Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria is a 2005 documentary that was written and directed by Victor Silverman and Susan Stryker. The film explores issues of transgender people most notably those of harassment, using the 1966 riot at the Compton’s Cafeteria. In the film, the background to the riot is that the urban renewal had destroyed low rent apartments. In addition, managers and owners of residences preferred tenants who were respectable, non-transgenders. This forced transgender people to move into the Tenderloin. The Compton cafeteria, located at the corner of Turk and Taylor streets was the one place that transgenders, male hustlers(as they are called in the film) and regulars took a rest. On this night, the owners of the restaurant were annoyed with a group of people making noise at one table and decide to call the police. One of the police officers, who was known to be rough with the Compton clientele, attempts to arrest one of the drag queens, she throws her cup of coffee at him. This becomes the start of the Compton Riot of 1966. The riot grows bigger as all the transgender people unite to fight the police; windows break, chairs are thrown around and when police reinforcements arrive, the riot moves to the streets. The film features interviews from different people who were there on that night, and one thing is clear, all of them feel that the riot was a result of pent up anger and frustration; anger and frustration from marginalization and harassment. The film also takes a look at how a community grew out of the riots.

Analysis Of The Article Of Margery Kempe - 1216 Words

The Woman in White: Reduction to Appearance Body in; The Book of Margery Kempe by Margery Kempe For all of time society has been incredibly judgmental of women’s clothing, among every other aspect of their lives. The Medieval time period was restrictive towards women’s clothing and bodies due to widespread beliefs that women must be held to a higher standard. Women were taught to be bashful when it came to their bodies during the Medieval time period, as explained in Representation of Women’s Emotions in Medieval and Early Modern Culture by Lisa Renee Perfetti. Angelic or in mourning, Margery Kemp’s change in attire between white and black impacts her relations with those around her. The Book of Margery Kempe by Margery Kempe portrays the reduction to appearance and body based on Margery’s attire. Reduction to Body, â€Å"the treatment of a person as identified with their body, or body parts† (feminist perspectives on objectification), can be seen throughout Medieval England and Margery Kempe’s autobiography. The female body especially, has undergone immense scrutiny for simply existing, genitelia often referred to as â€Å"shamefuls†(Allen 191). Margery’s disinterest in being sexual is based on the idea that God will love her more if she were to refrain from sex, just as a virgin might. But this may not be her only encouragement because â€Å"there are certain occasions when the women’s shame is strictly social† (Allen 193). Margery may be choosing to live chastely with John for the

Hail for a Chief free essay sample

A schoolgirl’s summer is the shortest season, and for me, an annual introduction to my own autonomy. Since I began my reign as instructor at the Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program, I’ve undergone a gradual and fundamental transformation in the short spurts of July and August, following the footprints of mentors and attempting to shape myself into one. During my first summer of volunteer employment, I had just passed my twelfth birthday; my retainers were brand-new and lisp-inducing; and my hair, chopped for charity in February, had barely grown past my chin. After taking my counselors’ orders for the previous four summers, I was suddenly in charge of giving them, and I was petrified. I thus followed my superiors’ instructions unequivocally, hoping to make the best impression possible and, more importantly, to not mess everything up. Storm clouds were congregating by the smokestacks that hiccupped on the harbor’s edge one August Thursday as I released the last of fourteen small sailboats into the building waves. We will write a custom essay sample on Hail for a Chief or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Within minutes, my fellow counselors and I chose to bring the children off the water early; they were safely shipped to the nearby members’ clubhouse while five of us remained to gather the sails and rudders left behind on the docks. We scooped up as much as possible under a black and bruising sky, then launched ourselves into chase boats and sprinted back to the now-empty classroom. Before we had crossed the gravel parking lot, hail began to fall in half-fist chunks and thunder roared across the harbor. Lightning struck. We’ve never determined if it hit the classroom directly or zapped something nearby; regardless, my companions and I were hurled to the floor, shrieking. I was terrified, but hysterical with laughter, for the strike and all that had preceded it composed the most exhilarating experience of my twelve-year life. With a squall and a scream I had survived nature’s wrath and protected both club equipment and the children under my charge. I was forthwith a real employee, a devoted role model; I could even be, as I am now, an heir to the head counselor throne. As I trekked from classroom to clubhouse, rain and hail continued to pelt my unprotected skin. I couldn’t bring myself to quiet my giggles or cease my skipping, uphill, through the wet gravel; my charges were close at hand, though, and I soon regained my composure. I had tasted the brine of responsibility, leaving the camper world behind, and for the following four summers would never return to sweet, fleeting youth. I was ferried from my childhood by inflatable dinghy that stormy August, and with each passing summer my journey continues, ever seeking the upwind route to maturity. I make my greatest advances in heat and high wind thanks to the demands of the harbor to which I owe my passion and discovery of my young-adult niche: cultivating sailors and people in the beloved saltwater where I, too, had grown up.

Lord Alfred Tennyson + Break Break Break Essay Example

Lord Alfred Tennyson + Break Break Break Paper Alfred Tennyson was born on August the 6th 1809, in Somersby, Lincolnshire. Alfred was the forth out of twelve children of George and Elizabeth Tennyson. Alfred’s father, George Clayton Tennyson suffered from depression and was absentminded. In the late twenties Alfred’s father’s physical and mental condition worsened as he became paranoid, abusive and violent. Tennyson escaped the troubled atmosphere of home when he followed his two brothers to Trinity College in 1827. He joined the literary club ‘The Apostles’ and met Arthur Hallam. Alfred Tennyson became very good friends with Arthur Henry Hallam. Arthur Hallam and Alfred Tennyson were friends for four years; their close relationship had an impact and influence on Tennyson’s poetry. Hallam later on med Emily Tennyson and the two friends looked forward to a life-long companionship. Hallam’s death from illness in 1833 shocked Tennyson profoundly. Tennyson wrote many poems about his grief and deepest feelings of his dear lost friend. Tennyson suffered from extreme short-sightedness. He had considerable difficulty writing and reading. Tennyson composed much of his poetry in his head, occasionally working on individual poems for many years. Long lived like most of his family, Alfred Lord Tennyson died on October 6, 1892, at the age of 83. The two poems that I will be talking about today will be Break, Break, Break and Ulysses. â€Å"Break, Break, Break† is a lyrical poem which centers on Tennyson’s grief over the death of his closest friend Arthur Hallam. Throughout the poem Tennyson grieves for his loss of his friend. Nature does not stop to mourn for the loss of anyone. Cold and unchangeable, it continues its relentless cycle. The waves of the ocean breaking against the rocks along the seashore never pausing even for a moment. But the world still carries on; as the fisherman’s boy is happily playing with his sister; the sailor is merrily singing and the ship is busily plying the waters of commerce. â€Å"Oh for the touch of a vanished hand, And the sound of a voice that is still† tells us of Tennyson yearning to touch the hand of his friend Arthur Hallam once more and to hear the sound of his voice. Tennyson has incorporated many themes into Break, Break, Break. The main theme is bereavement, heartache and emptiness. Tennyson talks of how the sun rises, children laughing and the world continuing on as if nothing has happened, going on as usual. While Tennyson is in his darkest hour of grief feeling bereaved of his closest friend. How could the world be so unfeeling? Another theme conveyed in the poem would be the indifference of nature. Nature continues its functions and cycles regardless of what is happening to human beings. Tennyson grieves over his best friend and the world is still cold and indifferent not caring in anyway. http://www. usp. nus. edu. sg/victorian/authors/tennyson/kincaid/ch3a. html

Death, the Result of Occurrence and Actions Essay Example

Death, the Result of Occurrence and Actions Essay Example Death, the Result of Occurrence and Actions Paper Death, the Result of Occurrence and Actions Paper Life is made up of chances to make choices, decisions of what you wish to do; the accumulated result of those choices is what you call your life (Goodness). As humans grow and experience life, they come upon different situations and opportunities that can drastically change and Impact their lives. Ultimately, It Is up to them to make the right decision that will either benefit or harm their future. However, people often fall to remember that they are living In reality and tend to make wrong decisions that do not have the desired result. Numerous pieces of literature depict how individuals fail to make the correct decisions that can often result in troublesome situations. F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, The Great Gatsby is a great example of how certain actions can lead to tricky situations further complicating life. The three deaths that occur In The Great Gatsby are a result of the decisions and actions that the volts make because they fall to see reality. A few people would claim that Myrtle and George Wilson died as a result of not living in reality due to the Jealousy, misery and misunderstandings that the couple had to endure. Myrtle and Georges irrational behavior and unwise decisions ultimately led them to their death. Even though Jealousy and misery were emotions that Influenced their decisions throughout their lives, It was their lack of attention and Inability to focus on reality that had, sooner or later, led them to their death. This also relates to another character in the novel, Jay Gatsby, who lets his emotions cloud his Judgment and fail to realize that it will only cause trouble and destruction in the end. When not living In reality, irrational and hasty decisions are made which can lead people to e caught In dreadful situations. Such decisions are made when Individuals only look at their own perspective of a situation, rather than being aware of their surroundings. This is continuously demonstrated in The Great Gatsby and occurs as a result of Myrtles death. It is clearly explicit in the novel, that Myrtle Wilson did not have any type of affection towards her husband. She constantly complained about George saying, The only crazy I was when I married him. I knew right away I made a mistake, (Fitzgerald 39). This mistake of marriage that Myrtle commits does not settle her satisfaction standards. This only amplifies her unreasonable behavior, ultimately leading to her death. Myrtle believed that she deserved a high-class man who was wealthy and powerful as opposed to the lower-class George. It was not a surprise that Myrtle would seek other methods to be with a high-class man. Myrtle was too caught up in her dream of being with the rich Tom Buchanan, that she was oblivious to the fact that he only used her for his pleasure. When Myrtle sees Tom with another woman In his car, she Is Instantly filled with Jealousy and anger. I Jordan Baker, whom she took to be his wife (131). The only thing Myrtle seems to comprehend is the woman in the car. She instantly believes that woman is Toms wife, when in reality it could be any woman in his car, that isnt his wife. This event builds up the tension and misery that Myrtle is experiencing when she is not taking reality into question. Myrtle then makes the irrational decision to stop Toms car, she ran out there an the one coming from Nor knock right into her going thirty or forty miles an hour (147). This incident demonstrates that Myrtle makes a hasty decision to pursue the life she once vision for herself. However, her wrong actions leave her to be ripped open, blood pouring out of her wounds, as road kill (151). The death of a loved one can drastically change a persons life forever. It is important for people to understand that they should not let emotions control their life. However, sometimes it becomes too difficult for a person to handle their out of control emotions, that they make the wrong decisions. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it is evident that George Wilson, lets his emotions have control over his mind, leading him to make poor decisions as a result of Myrtles death. Myrtles death causes George to go into depression and behave as though he was sent to an asylum for schizophrenia. Then I saw Wilson standing on the raised threshold of his office, swaying back and forth and holding to the doorposts with both hands (146). This illustrates the distraught emotions taking a physical toll on George. Before the car accident, George was suspicious of Myrtle having a relationship with another man. l just got wised up to something funny the last two days, remarked Wilson. That is why I want to get away (130). George goes into a crazy frenzy when he comes to the inclusion that the person, who killed his wife, was the same person who she was having an affair with. Mires morbid, George, said his friend. This has been a strain to you and you dont know what youre saying (166). George starts to think irrationally, and sets out to find the owner of the yellow car, otherwise known as the death car and redeem revenge by killing Jay Gatsby (144). The reality that George fails to understand is that Jay Gatsby might be the owner of the vehicle but that does not entirely mean he is the driver that killed Myrtle. In the novel, it is clear that Georges misery in the loss of his love leads him to his death, it was after we started with Gatsby toward the house that the gardener saw Willows body a little way off in the grass, and the holocaust was complete (170). George committed suicide because he could not live from the pain of Myrtles death. In reality it is possible to live without ones spouse, all it takes is time. If George allowed himself time to help move forward in life, he would have been able to live his life as per usual. The consequences of making irrational decisions of not living realistically caused George o commit suicide from the pain of Myrtles death. Doing something generous for someone may be seen as thoughtful and kind, but it can also include harming oneself in the process. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby consistently puts Daisy Buchanan life before his. Gatsby is in love with Daisy since he first met her, and ever since then he has made it his mission to become the man she desires. Since a huge portion of Gatsby life was dedicated to Daisy, he remains Gatsby was so deeply in love with Daisy that he had an imaginary world in his mind that only consisted of them both. What Gatsby failed to understand is that Daisy was not patient and moved on from the past they had together, which Gatsby is still holding on to. As a result of his deep emotions for Daisy, Gatsby was determined to have the same connection they had in the past. Im going to fix everything Just the way it was before, he said, nodding determinedly. Shell see, (117). Jay Gatsby was so concentrated on Daisy that he forgot reality, causing him to make hasty decisions that evidently result in his death. He couldnt possibly leave Daisy until he knew what she was going to do. He was clutching at some last hope and I couldnt bare to shake him free (155). When a car hits Myrtle Wilson in the groin, the person that was driving the vehicle was Daisy. Was Daisy Driving? Gatsby replies with, miss, he said after a moment, but of course Ill say I was (151). This is example of how Gatsby protects Daisy and puts her life first. What Gatsby does not realize is that by protecting Daisy he puts himself in danger. When George realizes that Gatsby was the cause of Myrtles death, he becomes determined to seek revenge by killing him. If Gatsby had realized what was going on reality, he could have still been alive. Instead of taking the blame for Myrtles death, he could have explained to George what exactly happened during the accident, which would have been the more reasonable option. Gatsby based his actions on what he thought was occurring for him, which ultimately lead to his death. In conclusion, it is undoubtedly clear that the three deaths of Myrtle, George, and Gatsby in The Great Gatsby, were an outcome of their actions that were taken while being oblivious to reality. If these three characters were aware of their surroundings ether than being inattentive to the reality, their lives could have been spared. A decision that a person makes could possibly affect their future positively or negatively. This is why everyone should be aware of how they make decisions and take actions upon choices that occur on a daily basis. In reality people will have to overcome different situations that require them to make decisions, based on how things occur for them and take the necessary actions. Nevertheless as humans experience life it is a part of human nature for people to make decisions that benefit themselves in the future.

Policy brief (Russia ) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Policy brief (Russia ) - Essay Example With inflation, hitting 7 percent, the prospect of the long periods of low energy prices has increased a lot of pressure on Russia, thereby revealing the problem of overreliance of the Russian economy on oil and natural gas (Gower, & Timmins, 2009). This paper discusses economic diversification as the best policy brief for this situation which is fast becoming a major economic problem in Russia. Introduction The Russian economic problems in the past have shown chronic characteristics i.e. they have shown long term effects, in the sense that the problem has been realized to be persistent in nature, and therefore requires structural measures (a substantial solution to problems facing all the factors of production in the economy). Recently, the Russian President, Putin, embarked on measures termed as ‘‘energetic’’ that rule tax increases out in the economy, but increase the ability and efficiency of the workforce operation (Gower, & Timmins, 2009). In accordanc e with economic principles, the current budget moves are necessary since too much state support normally disrupts the market conditions (both money and product) and lower the interest rates in the private sector investments and to particular sectors of the economy (Ellman, 2006). One crucial point to be realized however is the Russian government-owned Companies accounts for more than half of the economy since 2006. The global economy depends on the stability of the global demand and prices of goods and services. More specifically, Russian economy depends largely on the global demand and prices of its oil exports. In the event of further delay in recovery of the global demand, the Russian exports will be heavily depressed. In this context, the criticality of the Russian economy is directly dependent on the stability of oil price in the world, which currently depends on the Euro Zone recovery (Gower, & Timmins, 2009). With the United States impending involvement in the oil trade, whic h might lower the price of oil, much of the Russian vulnerability has been exposed, increasing the risk of overreliance on one sector of the economy. World Bank foresaw a reduced economic growth from 2.3 % to 1.8 % has been associated to slowdown in consumption, stuck investment demand as well as a continuing weak external environment. The increased 3.1% World Bank projection on Russian economic growth by 2014 is also associated to the stability of the global oil demand and prices. In addition to that, economists consider the Russian economy to be growing to its capacity, with constrained and weak investment activities as well as a very rigid labor market (Malle, 2013). Considering the above facts and projections, the best way of overcoming these economic challenges in the Russian economy and growth becomes the critical growth stimulation policy. Economic diversification, constituting shifts from the past growth models, which generally focused on stimulation of consumption demand (i nternal and external demand for resources) to a model that constitutes involvement of all sectors of the economy (Ellman, 2006). These structural changes that open up the constrained non-competitive sectors and market will be the basis of unlocking the idle Russian economic and growth potential. Statement of the Problem Economic stability is a factor of the growth in all economic sectors of the country. The aspect of economic stability starts from internal structural stability to

Competitiveness in business the world over is so acute that survival is possible for only those organizations, which are ready to employ every possible means to increase profit by reducing cost in production, while remaining uncompromising in quality and aggressive in marketing. The role of marketing communication in modern business practices has been identified as a key factor in survival in modern day business. As part of the search for business effectiveness the entire process of marketing communication is being approached in a comprehensive and unified manner where by all activities of business communication functions in unison. This approach is called Integrated Marketing Communication. This is a relatively new concept in management. ... 3.1 The Importance of Integrated Marketing Communication An integrated marketing communications program guarantees that every chance to send a message to a customer functions efficiently and smartly. Many needs of the enterprise like increasing membership, ensuring member retention, or increasing non-dues revenue, entry into an impenetrable market etc is achieved by stretching and straining all the sinews and muscles of the enterprise. This can be also called persuasive communication. Chris Fill has observed the complexities that communication involves. Persuasion can be experiential in of a negotiation process between people. It might need propaganda material typically associated with the government. Sometimes the sender or speaker may be presenting their opinion to a large group of people with no chance for feedback from the crowd (Fill 1995). Marketing communication can succeed only if the communicator has a clear idea of his task. Based on the target market and target's need he or she should have a unique selling proposition. Communication should help the target group to see you differently form other competitors. In addition, the sales targets should be planned and achievable levels should ear marked and budgetary provisions and a marketing strategy should be in place to achieve these levels. The message delivered in all places, occasions should be consistent, and reliable quantitative tools should measure results. 3.2 Integrated Marketing communication-Barriers and Gateways The main problem in implementing integrated marketing communication is elitism at the helm. All organizations run the danger of developing an elite group who have become conservative and might try maintaining statuesque because of the self imposed image of superiority. These may

The secret sharer Essay Example for Free

The secret sharer Essay The secret sharer by Joseph Conrad, is a tale of two strangers who meet in unusual circumstances. Legatt who was the first mate of the Sephora, escapes his ship where he was held captive after murdering a member of his crew. He swims to another ship and admits the whole truth to the captain. Both the captain and Legatt have bad relationships with their crew and they empathise with each other. Legatt is to be kept secret from the crew. His secrets are that he has murdered and is hiding to escape punishment and death. The captains secrets are that his men, the ship and the responsibility of his first command daunt him. The two of them share these secrets with each other and an intense relationship is built between them. Thus giving the title The secret sharer.. The captain and Legatt share physical similarities, they are the same size. My sleeping suit was just right for his size (pg6-7) And they share a very close resemblance of each other; this is reflected in the description of Legatt by the captain. The shadowy, dark head, like mine (pg 7) Legatt and the captain share very similar backgrounds, which draw a closeness and bond between these two men. They both attended the same sea school. Youre a Conway boy? (pg 7) And there was only a two-year difference in age. . but being a couple of years older (pg 7) Throughout the story you can feel the connection Legatt and the captain share by both feeling complete strangers on board the ships. I knew very little of my officers! (pg 2) The complete lack of knowledge and bond is felt here between the captain and his crew. In the beginning of the story, the captain is very uneasy when he is thrown into the position of captain, of a ship traveling a long and arduous journey. The captain begins to feel insecure about running his ship and questions his ability to lead his ship. During one of the first nights on board the ship, the captain demonstrates his thoughts of insecurity and self-consciousness, when he does something that a captain would not normally do: he plans to take part in a night watch. I felt painfully that I a stranger- was doing something unusual when I directed him to let all hands turn in without getting an anchor watch. (pg 4) The captain is so self- conscious and insecure about his actions that he reacts almost painfully to the crews judgement of his orders. The captain states that he perceives himself to be a stranger amongst the others. Among his insecurities, the captain also sees himself as a stranger to himself and not fit to run his own ship. But what I felt most was my being a stranger to the ship: and if all the truth must be told, I was some what of a stranger to myself. The captain feels isolated and completely in the dark where his crew and ship are concerned, he is a complete stranger to them. . ship of which, I knew nothing, manned by men of whom I knew very little more. (pg 4) Legatt and the captain are both aware of feeling strangers aboard the ship, this draws a bond between them and closeness and understanding of each other builds their relationship. My second mate. But I dont know much more of the fellow than you do(pg 12) I was almost as much of a stranger on board as himself (pg 12)

Sentimental and Humorous Speech by the Father of the Bride

Sentimental and Humorous Speech by the Father of the Bride Ladies and gentlemen, it is my very pleasant duty to welcome you here this evening to this special occasion of celebrating this marriage. I'm sure that you will all agree on how radiant and gorgeous the bride is. However the groom is not too bad himself. I know that some of you have traveled quite a distance to be with us here tonight, from both overseas and interstate. We really thank you and welcome you here tonight and hope that you really do enjoy yourselves accordingly. We are all very sad that the bride's grandfather is not here with us tonight. We all miss him, but I?m sure he is "watching down on us and is very proud and happy for her.? When they stood at the altar earlier today and she spoke those magic words ?I do?, I had cause to reflect that it's one of the few times in her life she's agreed to do something without question. Don't get me wrong, my daughter was wonderful and obedient as a child - with a bit of prompting. As a child she was full of life, effervescence, fun and joy and was just so bubbly she made friends with everyone. During her teen years, both at school and at University, she had a wonderful time, being the first person to gain the distinction of getting her degree with no study at all. However she worked hard for her degree, and we congratulate her for it. Then her Thespian Knight in Shining Armor in the form of the groom came along. I didn't doubt her choice at all, as Victor Hugo once said, "Men have sight, women have insight.? Now the groom is a very good actor, but with a somewhat "Puckish" sense of humor. At first we thought him a little shy, retiring and rather reluctant to talk with us, but we were victims of... ... bride she is, and the sight of them coming together as such a lovely couple makes the hard work and planning that has gone into this day worthwhile. As I say this, I see that my daughter has grown up, left home, and is now married. When I look back over the years, I realize how little time you really do have with your children..A philosopher once said: ''Treasure the love you receive above all. It will survive long after your gold and good health have gone.? We wish you all the happiness and prosperity in the world, and I am glad to welcome the groom and his family into our family. In conclusion, I hope that none of you will go home thinking the words of Groucho Marks: "I've had a wonderful time, but this wasn't it." And so I would now ask you to raise your glasses and join me in a toast to the future health and happiness of the union of the bride and groom.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini

Giant Lorenz Bernie â€Å"Ecstasy of Saint Teresa† I chose Ecstasy of Saint Teresa by Bernie because it is an impressive multi-media installation that helps me understand the intense experience of Saint Thresher's visions. Four black marble columns frame the scene of Saint Theresa floating as if on a cloud as a playful angel is about to plunge an arrow repeatedly into her. Her face portrays a feeling of intense pain and pleasure as she accepts the glory and light of her lord. Heavenly light is shining down on them. Through the use of natural light shining down from an unseen mystical source.Brass reflective rods are lined up in a row opening up towards the couple further signifying the beauty and grace of the light. From both sides of the main characters a viewer then notices a seated audience relief carved out of marble. The audience seems to be captivated by the untraditional portrayal of god like visions. The marble is so beautifully carved to render flesh and the texture o f clothing. Ecstasy of Saint Teresa is equally frightening and stunning; reflecting the religion it represents. This piece is a perfect example of Baroque sculpture. A common characteristic ofBaroque art is including the audience into the work. Ecstasy of Saint Teresa does this by way of the theater windows. The relief of witnesses within these windows gives the sense that all of this is happening on a stage, and the audience is thus placed in orchestral seats in front of the stage. This includes the viewers into the work and justifies the drama portrayed theatrically in front of us. The scene portrayed here is an intense one. Seeing the look on Saint Teeter's face shows fear, pain, and pleasure. This is Juxtaposed with the look of calm playfulness on the angels face as he threatens her with the arrow.Natural light bathes both the figures in a holy light that implies a sense of realism to the existence of God. The emotional impression the piece implies is very characteristic of Baro que art. One can imagine the pious traveling great distances to be brought down on their knees by Bering's instillation. Bernie was a master in working with marble. The articulate depiction of different weights of cloth is impressive. Saint Teresa is dressed in a heavy textile that weighs her down in the earthly sense. The angel is lifted into the heavens by his silky clothing that moves easily in the breeze. He shows off more of his craftsmanship by way of the balcony windows. There is an illusion of continued space beyond what we can see. Bernie also includes a stylized classical pediment. This pediment is cleverly utilized to hide a window that lets in the natural light that is focused on the centerpiece. Ecstasy of Saint Teresa was created using Marble, gilded brass, natural light, and architectural elements to create a whole composition. This makes Bering's epic depiction the first multimedia installation that predates the popularization of the art form by 3 centuries. Marijuana vs Alcohol Essay - 1664 Words

Drink Up? Or Toke Up? That is the Question They were both icons of unforgettable eras: one, the glamorous nineteen twenties; the other, the revolutionary seventies. In the twenties, alcohol was sipped cautiously behind the walls of speakeasies; glasses clinking under the flashing lights of entertainment signs. The hippies of the sixties and seventies passed pipes of burning marijuana, promoting peace while protesting for the rights of millions of Americans. No doubt, both drugs have had a major influence on the country, both have had their â€Å"glory† days. After a time of prohibition, the once thought sinful substance of alcohol was re-legalized. Marijuana, on the other hand, remains illegal in the country of the United States. But†¦show more content†¦So while it is very possible to die from having a few too many drinks, smoking marijuana seems to be far less toxic of a substance (Foland). Not only are the toxic levels of alcohol much greater than those of marijuana, but the consequences of drinking long-term are far more damaging as well. Next to smoking tobacco and being overweight, drinking alcohol is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Not including all the accidents and homicides that are attributed to the use of alcohol, the number of people that suffered alcohol induced deaths was 20,687 in 2003 alone (Foland). Those who choose to drink face the risk of many different health conditions, including some cancers, liver cirrhosis, liver disease, and heart disease---not to mention the risk of physical dependency (â€Å"Alcohol vs. Marijuana†). The effects on the brain are just as detrimental. In contrast to the old myth that drinking alcohol kills brain cells, recent studies have shown that instead it prevents new cells from being made. This process of making new cells, called neurogenesis, was found to be decreased by over fifty percent in abusers of alcohol. Marijuana seems to have the opposite effect. The same study showed that the use of marijuana actually increased neurogenesis, thus increasing the making of new brain cells (Wenk).
